Testing twitter August 16, 2008

WordPress.com does not allow plugins so I found two workarounds:

To list my twitters I am including the rss feed on the left. Twitter has a javascript to do it nicely, but it was getting stripped all the time.

To have my blog posts go to twitter I am using twitterfeed.com.

Does anyone have any more straightforward ways to do the connections? These strike me as workaround hacks.

Hola, Kara! WordPress is very highly incompatible with the social Web. And there’s no sign that WP staffers are going to do anything about it. You’ll find there is an extremely limited number of widgets to choose from. You can count the halfway decent ones on one hand. I actually regret starting a blog on WordPress. I think Blogger is superior. Escape before it’s too late! :) Oh, and WordPress also is very buggy, which you’ll be finding out soon. Can ya tell I hate WordPress?

Don’t blame you for leaving LJ, though.

I am wavering … I created a blogger account as well yesterday but I liked the wordpress software better. Note that I said the software, not the support. Search on ‘twitter’ in the forums, every single time someone asked a valid question about it the topic was closed. There was even one reply that said a certain staff member had not heard of it so it must not be popular.

I brought the topic up a couple of times on the forums, but like you said, it didn’t make any difference. The frustrating thing is you can’t embed Java script or Flash code on WordPress-hosted sites, including in sidebar widgets. That pretty much eliminates the possibility of connecting your blog with your social Web spaces with anything other than an RSS feed. That’s unacceptable, in my point of view. But you did make a good point: WordPress’ can be a little nicer to look at, depending on your taste. I happen to value a very simple/clean aesthetic when it comes to Web design, so I don’t mind blogger. I like the really plain themes Blogger has.

Love your pic on Blogger!

It all comes back to support. Twitter works with wordpress software (there are plugins and such), but they have something against it here. They seem to pick and choose their plugins so you can connect to some sites but not others. Then ignore when a lot of people say they want to connect to it.

Thanks for liking the pic as the one I posted was just whatever was on my phone during the test! I am just getting the site set up but so far am finding a lot of features there that will come in handy.
